Unexpected, But Good

From Building Sleep Pods to Reinventing Hotel Bookings
Some founders build one great company. Others keep reinventing industries. Elvina Beck is doing both.
In 2012, Beck founded PodShare, pioneering one of California's earliest coliving concepts. She built the first sleep pods herself using lumber from Home Depot, creating a minimalist, community-driven alternative to traditional housing for travelers, freelancers, and digital nomads.
PodShare challenged the idea that housing should come with long leases, security deposits, and unnecessary barriers. Instead, members could move freely between locations through a flexible membership model, more like a gym membership than a conventional rental.
Today, Beck is applying that same entrepreneurial mindset to the hotel industry with her newest venture, Deadline.
Deadline is an exclusive marketplace that helps independent hotels monetize unsold rooms without publicly discounting their rates. Instead of posting last-minute deals, verified travelers bid on available rooms while each hotel's minimum acceptable price remains hidden. If a bid meets the hotel's threshold, the traveler wins the room. If not, the hotel's pricing and brand value stay protected.
For hotels, it's a smarter way to generate incremental revenue from vacant inventory. For travelers, it transforms booking into a more engaging experience with the opportunity to unlock exceptional stays at prices they help determine.
Whether it's rethinking how people live or how they travel, Elvina Beck continues to challenge traditional business models by designing marketplaces that are more flexible, accessible, and mutually beneficial.

You already have a take on which AI lab ships next.
Claude or Gemini? OpenAI or Anthropic? GPT-7 before year-end or not? If you read tech newsletters, you've already formed opinions on all of it.
Kalshi has real-money markets on which AI model leads benchmarks this week, which lab ships AGI first, when Anthropic releases Mythos, whether OpenAI raises ChatGPT pricing, and which company has the best coding model at year-end. These aren't abstract questions — they're live markets with real money on both sides, moving as labs ship, benchmarks drop, and announcements land.
The edge belongs to whoever actually follows this space. Not the casual observer — the person who reads model cards, tracks evals, and notices when a new release outperforms the field before the mainstream press catches up.
That person has a genuine edge. If that's you, Kalshi lets you act on it.
